7 Sports Which Are Underrepresented In Video Games
5. Cricket
While cricket isn’t a popular sport in the United States and hasn’t been featured at the Olympics since 1900, it sees wide play in the United Kingdom, South Africa, India and Australia, among other countries. Despite this popularity, in recent years, the sport has seen a large decline in the video game industry.
Cricket is a similar sport to baseball in terms of fundamental gameplay. The sport essentially has the same cultural impact in the United Kingdom and India as baseball does for the United States.
Just as Rival Stars Horse Racing for horse racing, the 2019 game Cricket 19 is the sole cricket game on the current market. While the game has generally been reviewed and received positively, similar issues arise from the lack of variety when only a single title is available.
Historically, video games based on the sport were popular, seeing almost yearly released during the 2000s. EA Sports helmed the franchise EA Cricket from 1996 to 2007; however, since the end of this franchise, all major cricket titles released have been produced by smaller developers. For example, Cricket 19 was developed and published by Big Ant Studios, who have consistently worked on one off sports titles since 2010. Because of this, the few cricket games that do exist have found it hard to reach a mainstream audience.
