7 Terrifying Recent Horror Games You Must Play This Halloween

6. The Forest

Endnight Games

The Forest is an open-world survival horror game which strands the player on a cannibal-infested island following a plane crash, and after spending almost four years in early access, it was finally give a full-fat release this past April.

While the game's crafting, base-building and general survival mechanics are pretty familiar, what really makes The Forest worth playing is the terrifically dynamic and unpredictable A.I.

Rather than have the cannibals all subscribe to the same, preset attack routines, often they'll just get close to you and observe, which is ultimately far more creepy and offputting.

As you make progress, the push-back becomes more aggressive and you'll encounter an increasing array of stomach-churningly vile creatures, while fending them off and managing your resources becomes quite the challenge indeed.

This is certainly a game best played in a pitch black room with an awesome set of surround sound headphones, but if that's a little too much for you, you can always play co-op with friends, albeit at the expense of that wonderfully oppressive, lonesome atmosphere.
