7 Things We Hope To See In The Demon’s Souls Remake

5. Less Obscure World Tendency

Demon's Souls PS5
FromSoftware

World Tendency is one of the most intriguing mechanics included in Demon’s Souls, but also one of the most obtuse.

This mechanic can be best described as a sliding scale which will impact the game state and trigger unique events. Certain actions such as defeating bosses will have a positive effect, while dying, amongst other things will have a negative effect. So, somewhat sadistically, the worse you’re playing - the harder the game will get (thanks for that, FromSoftware).

World Tendency can affect the game in a variety of interesting ways; based upon which extreme of the scale the World Tendency leans towards: enemies are harder but drop rarer items, new areas will become accessible, or unique NPC’s might appear.

It’s a wonderful idea, but the execution was lacking. The whole system is needlessly fiddly and if you’re trying to manipulate it to your advantage, you’ll likely need to reference a wiki.

An elegant solution would be to add an item - similar to the bonfire ascetics in Dark Souls 2 – which would allow players to influence World Tendency more easily, giving players the ability to tailor the game’s difficulty to their liking, or access the content gated behind this mechanic.
