7 Upcoming Video Games That Will Waste Their Biggest Selling Points

2. Delivering An Experience Only Shenmue Can - Shenmue III

Here's why Shenmue won't land: It's not 1999.

Not saying there's no value whatsoever in "doing more Shenmue", but you have to question why the fandom became so attached to it in the first place. Was it specifically the combat or the beats of the narrative? Or was it more to do with a ludicrous game budget being spent on nothing but world interaction?

See, back in the late 90s and early 2000s, 3D worlds were still being perfected, and the chase to realise interaction on as grand a scale as possible was in vogue. THIS is why Shenmue blew so many people away: Because you could (or couldn't!) pick up every item in the world, you could (or couldn't!) visit the arcade, win toys and play emulated versions of Sega games, and you could (or couldn't!) dial in-game phone numbers to find secret messages.

Not knocking the effort put into such things, but in 2019, with all those things either being taken for granted or not being interesting enough to bring back, how is Shenmue going to "redo" the feeling of technological advancement?
