7 Ups & 6 Downs From E3 2019
6. Ubisoft Bring The Banter
While a lot of people assumed that E3 wouldn't get sillier than someone shouting "you're breathtaking!" and derailing Keanu-freaking-Reeves, Ubisoft went all out at the start of their conference with the humour. Watch Dogs: Legion has come a long way from the original title's gritty aesthetic, which was made abundantly clear when the publisher spent so much of its reveal focused on Helen, an OAP retired assassin who kicks all kinda of ass in the latest game.
This was followed straight up with the theme from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia blaring out, as star Rob Mcelhenney came out to announce his new video-game focused comedy show, Mythic Quest. From there we had Jon Bernthal and his lazy dog on stage, as well as a James Bond-inspired spoof trailer to reveal the new Rainbow Six: Siege Operators.
Not all the jokes might have hit, and you could argue that E3 should be about the games and not gimmicks, but in a weekend that at times felt so devoid of personality and passion, Ubisoft did a great job of at least making things entertaining.
