The system was given a major overhaul with Resident Evil 4 and added a layer of micro-management which I'm sure many of us lost countless hours from arranging and organising our weapons and items. Resident Evil 4's is widely regarded as the best inventory system of the entire franchise and that is exactly why it needs to have a reprisal albeit with a few alterations. To prevent breaking immersion by pulling out of the action to equip a different weapon or an item, there should be a mechanic where you can assign four items in your inventory to the respective direction on the controllers' D-pad. This then allows you to then have the best of both worlds by having the fully-fledged catch-a-breath mechanic of the Resident Evil 4 inventory with the ease-of-access quick-equip method of later titles.
