7 World War I Video Games You Should Definitely Play
3. Verdun
The game from which Tannenberg was spun off of, Verdun is a masterclass in Great Warfare simulating, showcasing the Western Front as opposed to the former's Eastern Front frollicking.
The differences are apparent in the weapons and outfits; French troops wore blue-ish combat gear and used the Lebel rifle as a standard issue gun for troops on the Front, therefore BlackMill should be commended for accurately differentiating the troops in both theatres of conflict. And that's not the end of the authenticity.
The use of gas masks, the country accurate guns used like the Webley revolver for the British, barbed wire, constant artillery - for an indie title, Verdun really feels like a full triple-A experience as it manages to project what the Western Front was truly like for the combatants.
Its use of more bombastic elements as one team holds off a push from the enemy may reflect a smaller portion of what trench warfare was, but the game is still engaging. It also ramps up the brutality, with full limb removal and gushing claret to really sell the shocking nature of the Great War. Verdun is an indie war title that manages to capture the intensity and accuracy of this conflict masterfully.
