8 Awesome Twists That Saved Terrible Video Games
5. You Were Doomed From The Beginning - Amnesia: Rebirth
While every title in the survival horror genre was focusing on splattering gore and over-the-top jump-scares, Amnesia: The Dark Descent stood out by centring its gameplay around oozing tension and a permanently tense atmosphere.
So, when the sequel, Amnesia: Rebirth, was released, fans were clamouring to get a copy. Sadly, Rebirth fails to recapture the magic of its predecessors (especially the PS4 version). Not only do the excessive puzzles become tedious, they interrupt the tension, which is what made the previous entry so iconic.
In fact, the only time Rebirth comes close to emulating Dark Descent is during the ending. Throughout the journey, Tasi does everything in her power to avoid turning into a ghoul.
In the closing moments, Tasi discovers her efforts were for nought since she was infected at the beginning of her expedition. Not only that, she passed the infection onto her baby, Amari, cursing her to the same fate.
But it gets worse. An interdimensional entity called The Empress offers to save Amari if Tasi allows herself to become a ghoul. Alternatively, Tasi can fight The Empress, which will result in her and Amari perishing.
No matter what choice you make, you feel like you picked the wrong one. The whole dilemma is so heartwrenching, it makes you forget how average the rest of the game is.
