8 Best Nintendo Switch Launch Games - Ranked

5. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove/Specter of Torment

Shovel Knight just plain RULES, and thanks to developers Yacht Club amassing a solid fanbase through Kickstarter for the first instalment back in 2014, it's blossomed into an entire media property, including an Amiibo and a number of additional campaigns.

For the Switch's launch, Shovel Knight has been repackaged in a couple of awesome ways.

First-up, the standalone Specter of Torment is a single-player prequel centring on Specter Knight; a boss otherwise fought in the standard Shovel Knight campaign. With a completely new moveset, levels and a surprisingly meaty story (Shovel Knight's platformer aesthetic belies a beating narrative heart), if you don't want to fork out for the full bundle or the various other Knight stories, Specter is a great place to start.

Alternately, Treasure Trove is the immaculate original Shovel Knight campaign, the mechanically-diverse, 'design-your-own-attack' expansion where you play as Plague Knight and a new co-op mode so you can split Joy-Cons and play together. On top of that, later in 2017 we'll get a four player 'battle mode' and another campaign featuring King Knight, which will download for free when available.

It's worth noting too, if you already own Shovel Knight on other systems, all of this additional content will be a free download in April - the Switch just gets exclusivity for the first month. If you're yet to play one of the best 2D platformers of all time, dive (dig?) on in.
