8 Brilliant Ways Video Games Punished Out-Of-Bounds Players

3. Drive By Shooting - Alone In The Dark

Sometimes the most simple examples of developers getting players back on track are the best, and you don't get much more simple than shooting your audience in the face and making them start over again.

When it comes to the almighty Alone In The Dark franchise, you might expect the mechanics that keep players on route to be horror themed, such as nasty enemies lurking in the shadows to grab you should you tread where should not be trodden, and in the first game you'd get exactly that, with a duo of monsters blocking your escape.

However the second entry in the series took a rather different approach, and by that I mean that if you looked to leave the mansion grounds before the game wanted you to, you'd be, and I can't believe they programmed this in, become the victim of a drive-by shooting!

That's right, no monsters, no jump-scares, just a face full of lead and a rather blunt reminder to stay in your lane. Ouch.
