8 Brilliant Ways Video Games Punished Out-Of-Bounds Players

2. Random Encounter Beat Downs - Fallout 1+2

While doing the research for this list and more specifically about how the Fallout franchise handled players looking to break boundaries and venture towards areas the devs really didn't want them to explore until later in the game, I came across one of the best video game terms ever.

Beef Gates.

This is where developers pump out stronger and better-equipped enemies in order to stop you from treading in areas you're not meant to visit, and the Fallout Franchise uses these to hilarious effect across its tenure. For example Fallout: New Vegas smashes out loads of Cazadores and Deathclaws to keep you on a much safer path, but the best and more insane examples can be found in Fallout 1 and 2.

Here, the game would use its random encounter generator to spring a surprise on players venturing too close to late game areas, and more often than not you're going to find yourself totally outclassed and kicked right on your arse.

Massive groups of raiders, Super Mutants, explosive Brahmin, all will make you very aware that you're not welcome at this point in time, and that it's best if you took your adventuring down some other dusty trail.
