8 Convoluted Video Game Narratives NOBODY Understands

5. Eternal Sonata

God Bless Eternal Sonata because I honestly would have loved to have been in the pitch meeting when this absolute barnstormer of a barmy idea was dropped onto the table.

"So it's an anime adventure game with RPG elements and a cool combat mechanic where you have a limited time to wail on enemies as much as you want? Sounds brilliant!.....wait...sorry I must have misheard you. You want the characters to all be based on Frederick Chopin's music and that this adventure is actually his fever dream as he dies of Tuberculosis?....ok? WELL, AT LEAST IT'S UNIQUE!"

As you might expect from a setting that is literally forming from a man's last thrashings against the night, the story of Eternal Sonata is wild and often nonsensical.

Now you could well argue that it doesn't need to make sense seeing as the emotional weight of this tale still hits hard, and I'll totally agree with you on that, but when you end the game on his characters still living past his death, now given agency to exist in a world made of music... you have to take a step back and say "what the f**k just happened"

Still, great game.
