8 Developers That Got Away With Selling You The Same Video Game Twice
3. Assassin's Creed Revelations
Though Assassin's Creed would become known for churning out the same basic game over and over, at least Ubisoft's various teams would change up enough of the game to warrant a sequel. Black Flag's ship combat, Unity's gorgeous French setting complete with interiors (when it wasn't falling apart) - alongside new stories, characters or time periods every time, they easily justified the price.
That was the case for each game... bar Revelations (or Rogue, if we're classing that as a 'proper' instalment).
Coming at the close of the Ezio trilogy, Revelations was the first game made after Creative Director Patrice Desilets departed Ubisoft, leaving the remaining devs to essentially pick up the scraps for the next release. The result was something that still nailed its narrative with a solid cutscene depicting Altair and Ezio 'meeting' in the same place across two time periods, but fell down considerably when it came to combat, gameplay and narrative overall.
Case in point: The hookblade (described in the game as "a hook... with a blade!") - it immediately became the lamest weapon in the franchise. Used to climb certain gaps incrementally faster than before, it exemplified Revelations as the series' tipping point; a release that showed Ubi were going to pump these things out regardless, no matter how little necessity was present.
