8 Essential Features Every Future Video Game Desperately Needs
4. A Pause & Resume Function
The newest consoles initially showcased this feature as something that would come as standard, regardless of what you'd be playing. However in reality, hardly any new titles handle it reliably, and although you can toggle 'Pause and Resume' options in both the PS4 and Xbox One's settings, it just doesn't feel reliable. And why is that? Because we inherently don't want to leave devices powered on in any capacity when we're away from them. Simple as. The answer is to essentially make sure every game has a Dark Souls-style 'save where you are' function. It'd be different from quicksaving that lets you forever reload your own custom checkpoints, as once you've booted the game back up and continued, that previous save is wiped and replaced. Checkpoints and standard progression can continue as normal, but put the notion of pausing and resuming on the game side, rather than the console. It'd work far better, and would always mean you could pick right back up from where you left off.
