6. Shloop Shloop - Shadow Hearts

Now if we're being honest, Shadow Hearts isn't exactly a game with its boots on Terra Firma, what with the central focus on transforming into monsters and preventing a magician from kidnapping your friend set in a Lovecraftian-inspired nightmare.

However, it does attempt to tell its plot as conventionally as it can.

Yet there is one moment so utterly left field that it may leave players in a confused mess by the end of the game. Not because the plot descends into madness or anything, but because you'll just be forever thinking about it so much that the rest of the narrative won't sink in.

I'm speaking of course about the Sea Mothers Tale, a story told by the Sea Mama herself which aims to draw comparisons between a figure of legend and the events unfolding in front of you. To give credit to the voice actress, the effort she puts into this tale is actually very impressive, yet there's just one problem.

No one told her she could ignore the stage directions. As a result, we get a horribly emotive reading of the words "Shloop" "Splat" and a sound that could only have come from a person having a nail driven into their hand very very slowly.

It is a painful listen that's for sure, and it's also one you can't skip, meaning that this utterly blows away the FFX laughing sequence in terms of sustained cringe agony for the player. *shivers*
