The Final Fantasy name is most associated with the 'main series' of numbered games, but surpassing them in many ways and standing as one of the all-time greats in its own right, is Final Fantasy Tactics.

Both the grid-based combat system and the immersive narrative were highlights. The former made apt use of the 'job system' introduced in Final Fantasy III and bettered in Final Fantasy V to create a complexly strategic experience. The latter was a world-spanning tale of war, deception and political machination with a body count that George R. R. Martin would be proud of.

Expanded upon with additional scenes and subplots in the enhanced 'War Of The Lions' remake, it remains one of the most well-written gaming storylines.

Two sequels followed in the form of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Tactics A2, both of which were somewhat diluted in terms of plot and gameplay complexity to make them more user friendly, particularly to younger players.

Both were hugely enjoyable experiences nevertheless, but bar a short-lived (and best forgotten) 2013 mobile title that bared little resemblance to its namesakes, the series has now been missing in action for over a decade.
