8 Great Trailers For Underwhelming Video Games
4. Tomb Raider: Underworld
Lara Croft’s eighth main outing is definitely not one of her best.
The game struggled with maddening camera angles, a tired plot, technical issues and new gameplay features that felt more like retreading than reinvention. The series was looking downhill and seemed to be fighting a losing battle to remain relevant in the triple-A video game landscape.
The initial trailer however, was a thing of beauty. Opening on Lara’s iconic twin pistols we slowly move through a mansion engulfed in flames. After a few seconds it’s clear that this is happening in reverse.
Stylized in a one shot take with stunning visuals we rewind back to before the destruction to reveal Lara standing in front of her mansion with a detonator. Returning back to forward motion, Lara then hits the detonator and subsequently blows up her mansion.
This 2008 teaser trailer threw fans into a frenzy with fans clamouring to play the game to find out just what the hell was going on. This moment is actually a playable level in the game which reveals that it was actually Lara’s doppelganger who caused the explosion. Sly devils!
