8 Hidden Video Game Modes You Never Knew About

1. What If? Mode - Spider-Man (2000)

What If...? has been a staple of Marvel Comics since the late 1970s. Its premise is simple: we all know how the big Marvel events happened, but what if locations/key players/outcomes etc. had been different? Essentially, the possibilities are endless.

One of the PS1's most neglected gems these days is Spider-Man, a brilliant wall-crawling action platformer styled after the equally great '90s animated series.

The game's quirky tone is the perfect stage for some of Marvel's more off-the-wall antics, and, if you dig deep enough, that's exactly what you'll find.

Typing 'GBHSRSPM' into the main menu's cheats screen will unlock What If? Mode, in which the game's story plays out mostly as normal, but dialogue is generally far more whimsical and self-aware, superheroes like Ghost Rider and the Silver Surfer can be seen in cameo appearances, and whole backdrops of environments are sometimes changed to flowery patterns or photos of the developers.

Even better, What If? Mode is introduced at the start of the game by Uatu the Watcher - just like it is in the comics. These developers sure did do their homework.

If you're fortunate enough to still own a copy of this Playstation classic and have never seen this mode before, I think it's pretty clear what you need to do now. In fact, why are you still reading this? GO!
