8 Imposing Video Game Bosses (That Secretly Suck)

6. Tyrant - Resident Evil 2

Super Tyrant Mr X RE2 Resident Evil 2

If there's one creature that's more synonymous with the Resident Evil franchise that isn't the humble zombie, it's Tyrant aka William Birkin's biggest regret. With that big bulbous eye, and his stalking of the player throughout the game, come the end of Resident Evil 2 his appearance is a sure sign that things are about to go from bad to worse.

And yet, despite his horrific stages of mutation, the actual FEAR created is all undone by this, the minigun that just so happens to have been left near this tram in Claire's closing act. The moment you pick this up the sense of empowerment you get overwhelms the sense of dread that Tyrant creates. Sure, he's still grotesque and can give you a nasty scratch with his talons, but with this in your hands you'll mow through him in short order.

One of the most effective things horror games can do is remove any sense of power from the player, making them feel vulnerable and powerless, and yet with a gun that would make Vulcan Raven squawk in pleasure, this balance is shattered. With Mr X on Leon's side, it's different, as the arena is smaller and it's harder to dodge thanks to the random falling debris, yet Claire doesn't have this issue and can run laps around the tram until she's in a better position to unleash a hailstorm of lead. It's still one of my favorite bosses in the game but as a credible threat Tyrant... kinda sucks here.

Jules Gill hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
