1. Tidus and Yuna - Final Fantasy X
Yes I am fully aware this is the second Final Fantasy game in this list, but since this is the last halfway competent game in the series it deserves a mention. Yuna and Titus' romance story is one built on tragedy and that ends on tragedy due to the gradual revelations about Titus' life and past that see them part ways in an incredibly sad ending that the writers deserve applause for. The two characters start out in vastly different circumstances- Titus a Blitzball player and Yuna a summoner and destined mage- and they seem to have enough trouble to surmount the various hurdles standing in between them to form any sort of bond at all- not least of which is the persistent Seymour. Like many Final Fantasy games, the main protagonist finds his past has been hidden from him and the rest of the game is the protagonist having to face said past- sacrificing much to do so. However, perhaps in no Final Fantasy game is the sacrifice more telling than it is in 10 and it leaves the player with a bittersweet ending that truly makes it one of the best in the series to date. I just wish they could find those writers again and have them work on another one...
