With the Fallout franchise as a whole enjoying a resurgence in popularity due to the recent hit TV series, many have been diving into the original two games for the first time.

And as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, of course there are fans questioning why Bethesda isn't already hard at work on remakes of Fallout and Fallout 2 in the sprawling style of the newer games.

But for many, the original visual style and gameplay is what those earlier Fallout games are all about, and to remake them in the vein of Fallout 3 or 4 would be too radical an act of transformation.

This sentiment was surprisingly shared by Bethesda chief Todd Howard, who recently opined that he had little interest in modernising the first two Fallout games because their charm is so thoroughly ingrained in the late '90s era in which they were made.

Howard added that his only concern is to ensure that modern audiences can keep running the games on newer PC hardware. Good man.

And everything he said is absolutely on the money - remake the first two Fallouts and they become just another pair of Fallout games in the modern era. The way they are now, they still stand out, and more than that, they're still an absolute blast to play.
