3. It Is All In The Music
While Gary Schyman's soundtrack is great and one I have been listening to while writing this, the choice of songs for the game is really quite interesting. The most important of these songs is "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" which takes a double meaning in the game. A truly heart breaking song about the passing of loved ones and how a 'circle' becomes broken when they die and leave the earth to join heaven "in the sky". When thinking about Booker's story the song takes two meanings. You could see the "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" as a literal refernece to the Lutece twins trying to change the perpetual cycle of Comstock and Booker's story. However it also has a more emotional meaning as it accurately describes the pains of Booker having had Anna taken from him and taken to a literal kingdom "in the sky". The song is used three times in the game to emphasise this very point. The game also features songs that simply should not have been in the 1912 setting. Each is used for relavent meanings than they might first appear. I will only reference one here but the inclusion of 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' is pretty interesting. When you first arrive at Battleship Bay, you can hear a fairground rendition of the song. If you actually look at the lyrics for the song, two lines read:
Some boys take a beautiful girl And hide her away from the rest of the world
I would argue that if the ending had to be condensed to two lines, that would be pretty close. There are tons more little interesting meanings in the games tracklist but I will let you figure those out for yourself.
