2. Terrible Bosses - Super Mario Wonder

Anyone who expected Super Mario Wonder to be just another 2D Mario platformer was in for a wonderful surprise. Not only does this entry have a slew of new enemies, power-ups, and mechanics, the badge system lets Mario and the gang equip special abilities, allowing for more diversity in the gameplay.

But what makes this installment stand out is the Wonder Flowers, which transform the level's layout (or the players themselves). Coming into contact with these magical plants may cause Mario to be hurled into space, turn into a slime, or be chased by an Indiana Jones-styled boulder.

While admiring these magnificent mechanics, it's clear the development team tossed in every idea they had, so each level feels distinct, inventive, and unique.

Too bad the same can't be said about the bosses. Each castle ends with a confrontation with Bowser Jr., who can be defeated by (once again) being bonked on the head several times. The variety in each encounter is so mild, it's basically the same fight every time.

But that's not all. Each Airship concludes with Robot Bowser, who can be destroyed by stomping the overhead switch once. As a result, these "battles" shouldn't last longer than ten seconds.

Even though the developers pulled out all the stops in every other aspect, it seems like less effort was put into the end-of-level baddies.
