Back in the day, a line in the sand was drawn by DICE when looking at the emerging Call Of Duty franchise with the developer basically stating "ok that's you over there, and we're doing everything different over here", and for a long time this ran true with the two series presenting war in very different ways.

Call of Duty moved towards arcade twitch reaction killstreaks, and Battlefield dug into large maps, teamwork-focused game modes, and having less durability than an ant made of paper. While their paths might be linking up at the moment with both chasing that Fortnite "what up my fellow kids" vibe, back when DICE were making Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, things couldn't have been more different.

Here the game utilized an amazing one time feature known as the "Hot-Swap" which allowed players running through the single-player campaign, to literally jump between soldiers at a moments notice, allowing them to take up better positions, clear out enemies blocking the way for the rest of your allies, and use different load-outs on the fly.

It was brilliant, it allowed for tactical play, it allowed the flow of war to feel dynamic, so of course, it was never used again. Ok....cool.
