Given how many iconic looks comic book characters tend to sport over the years, it really is amazing that suit customisation has never been used before.
Though yes, alternate costumes have been a staple of the genre for years (Insomniac's title possesses those in abundance), developers have always stopped short of giving players full freedom to taylor each aspect of their costume. It would've made plenty of sense for the Arkham games, especially when they shifted from the gothic blueprint set by Asylum to a more sci-fi oriented set-up in City, but alas, it falls to Spidey to pioneer this feature himself.
Insomniac's Spidey suit was immediately divisive when it was first unveiled, but its uniqueness is part of its strength. Fans not keen on the look shouldn't fret however, with each and every aspect of the costume set to be customisable in some way.
