8 Secret Video Game Cutscenes That Change EVERYTHING

8. Samus In A Bikini – Metroid (1986)

Samus' current presentation as a spandex touting, arm cannon-wielding badass woman, is far flung from her archaic first iteration. That’s not to say that the former doesn’t hold true, but rather, Samus in her first outing was not even thought to be female.

The way she was described in the manual of the original Metroid was as explicitly male.

It is only through enacting a series of secret cutscenes at the end of the game, that she was instead revealed to be female.

The way this was done however, has come under much criticism. Simply, the quicker the player could complete the game, the more scantily clad Samus would appear. Completion in under an hour rewarded the player with the final, now infamous image of Samus in a scarlet bikini.

Whilst her pixelated form may not appear scandalous by today’s standards, it remains a heavily contested inclusion.

For better or worse, Samus' depiction not only changed the way that gamers at the time thought about their space-age hero in a power suit, but would inform the representation of female game characters for decades to come.
