8 Things Nobody Wants To Admit About God Of War
3. The Best Story Threads Are Sequel Teases
As previously stated, although the main narrative in God of War is all about Kratos and Atreus scattering their mother's ashes, there's plenty more going on under the surface. In particular is the focus on fleshing out the other gods of the realm, specifically Odin and Thor, and how their conquest of tyranny has seeded oppression and fear into every corner of the land.
Perhaps more interestingly though, these characters don't actually show up in the flesh. They arguably get more focus than the people who do appear in the story, which is why some fans were a bit miffed that the gods never played a direct role in the game. The writers treated a lot of the title like this, with teases and revelations about Atreus' true heritage and Kratos' past and all being far more interesting than the actual story players got.
And yeah, it's fine to tease sequels (after all, Cory Barlog allegedly has five games in mind), but when that material overshadows the actual plot, or even worse, is more interesting than the actual plot, something has gone terribly wrong.
