However there's one thing that even he can't protect against, and that's a horde of unkillable villagers.

Thanks to his magic attacks all having splash damage, if the big bad hits a villager of the town by accident, then the entire community will descend on him and tear him apart.

That 40,000 health drops in under a minute thanks to the combined attack and you can beat the final boss, and end the game, without doing anything at all.
