8 Video Game Characters Who Desperately Need Therapy

4. Max Payne - Max Payne

The Last of Us Part 2 Ellie

Is there any single video game character more deserving of a big, tight hug than Max Payne?

The man is obviously traumatised and depressed by the brutal murder of his wife and young daughter, and you can spoon a double-helping of survivor's guilt on top too, because for much of the series Max only lives for ultra-violent revenge.

He's not so much processed his grief as shot his way through it in balletic slow-mo, likely explaining not only his addiction to alcohol and painkillers, but those maddening nightmare sequences from the first game.

And this is without even getting into Max's numerous friends who've either been killed or revealed themselves to be very bad people.

Max Payne 3 at least appears to end with him in a far better place mentally, though given that Max also seemed to triumph over his self-loathing at the end of the second game - only to relapse into self-destructive habits in the next one - it'd certainly do him some good to engage the services of a professional.
