8 Video Game Developers Who Totally Sold Out
2. Slightly Mad Studios
When you set out to make a driving simulation game, you best be prepared to put the work in, you know, actually making the cars handle as they should. While a distinct third in the race of the driving sims, Project Cars turned a tonne of heads when it dropped on the market back in 2015 thanks to it's attention to detail, and some pretty slick visuals throughout.
It seemed like the developers Slightly Mad Studios were on to a winner, and so they pushed on a made a sequel, fixing some of the issues with the original and diving even further into making the cars handle and react as they should. This resulted in much higher critical praise and led to some prophecizing that if the series continues on with such effort, that it might unseat Forza or Gran Turismo further down the line.
However, the series hit a sudden brick wall with the third instalment. Firstly it flew in the face of the fans themselves, who for months had been clamouring for fixes to the previous games, and secondly, it took all of the realistic driving controls and for some unknown reason seemed to chuck them all in a skip.
Critics lambasted the game for it's poor controls, unrealistic sounds and pathetic cosmetic damage, and at nearly every turn it looked as if the game had been stripped of all assets, charm and personality.
Turns out that the developers were aiming to hit a wider market so abandoned the racing sim sensibilities and instead moved the gameplay to a more action-centric one, but instead of attracting a new audience, they seem to have lost their core one.
