8 Video Game Sequels That Fixed EVERYTHING

7. XCOM 2

As a bit of an XCOM purist, having begun my descent into madness with the series with the PS1 port of the first game, I have to admit that the moment that the booby-snakes from XCOM 2 rocked up on the scene that my nose began to turn up slightly.

The angular design, the narrative that centred on you actually failing to stop the alien invasion, the move towards gameplay that carried intense time limits in each battle all felt, on paper at least, to be completely foreign to what I thought would make a brilliant XCOM game.

Oh how wrong I was. For XCOM 2, might well be the title that best represents the core message of what the series is, and did so by changing pretty much everything fans were expecting. The sheer tension that comes from not only managing your squad, but also moving them up through the map under strict time limits is enough to make your bones snap, and you'll be close to a heart attack come the close of each and every mission.

This is a sequel that took a look at what made the initial reboot work so well and then dialled things up to 11. It can't get much louder, and nor can the pained screams that we XCOM fans cry out in. It's ok it might sound painful but this is how we express love.
