8 Video Game Sequels That Went TOO FAR
2. Dynasty Warriors 9
Dynasty Warriors 9 is an unfortunate case of a video game that should have probably just stayed in its surprisingly lucrative lane, as while most video game franchises get raked over the coals for failing to innovate, weirdly enough it was sticking to the exact same formula each and every year that had given this series so much success.
The simplistic button-mashing combo approach to these games mixed with their epic "1 vs 1,000" mantra made Dynasty Warriors a smash hit series across the globe and fans were more than happy enough to shell out for each new edition as long as it contained maybe one or two new playable officers. In fact, the two times that the series diverged from this formula ended up being the most reviled entries, namely Dynasty Warriors 6 and 9.
With DW6 came the Renbu system which promised fans "unlimited combos" which let me tell you as a die-hard fan was like being told "here's unlimited spending money in the factory of dreams", however in reality this actively removed your combat options as you had to build up a combo meter in order to gain access to the better attacks.
Dynasty Warriors 9 on the other hand decided to take things "open-world" meaning that while we got more areas to explore, most of the landscape was utterly devoid of things to do and it meant that all the busywork of open-world titles was now dolloped onto the experience. Surprisingly players didn't fancy riding for 15 minutes in order to fight ten lads and then have to hoof it back.
We wanted epic-scale battles, but what we got was a few car park beatdowns showing just how much DW9 had tried at overextending its ideas.
