8 Video Game Side Missions That BROKE YOU

5. The Weight of Chains - God of War Ragnarök

Even accepting that God of War 2018 and sequel Ragnarök lent far greater emotional dimensions to the franchise, who saw this utterly heart-rending side mission coming?

"The Weight of Chains" is the very first side quest in the game and sees Mimir asking players to help right a wrong he committed years ago, by freeing a prisoner he captured in ordered in to win Odin's favour.

Said prisoner just so happens to be a Lyngbakr, a gigantic whale-like creature which Mimir caught and chained up in Svartalfheim to harvest its fat for lantern oil.

Though it seems like Kratos will cut the poor creature's chains free and give it its own Free Willy moment, that's not quite what happens. When the Lyngbakr is "liberated," it simply... stays put in the bay.

Kratos heartbreakingly notes that it has "grown accustomed to its chains," much to Mimir's distress.

Mimir insists there must be a way to get the Lyngbakr moving, only for Kratos to declare that there's no making this right, leaving Mimir to reflect on the brutal impact of his prior actions.
