8 Video Game Side-Quests That Were Better Than The Main Story
3. Flashback Missions - The Warriors
Very few licensed video game film tie-ins are good, and even fewer are considered great.
The Warriors video game based on the movie of the same name however, well that's the absolute best.
Seriously, point me to another game with as much respect for the film source material, made this well by an expert team of designers and that has this much extra side content that feels utterly necessary to the overall experience? I'd wager you'd not find many examples right?
What makes The Warriors so special is that the game not only gives you an entire prologue campaign that sets up how the Warriors split from The Destroyers to form their own gang, but also contains optional "Flashback Missions" dedicated to each of the main protagonists of the group. In these missions, you get to see how and why the likes of Ajax, Swan, Cowboy, Cochise, and Rembrandt decided to join The Warriors, as well as humorous examples of how they developed their quirky characteristics.
An entire mission dedicated to finding a hat for Cowboy should not be this entertaining, yet because it's delivered with that over-the-top Rockstar style becomes a highlight moment. Plus to say that the side missions are better than the main story isn't actually that much of a stretch, because at it's core, the story is "get home without getting your head kicked in", so anything deeper is arguably going to make for a more mentally stimulating ride!
