8 Video Game Villains That Tricked You Into Helping Them

4. Handsome Jack - Borderlands 2

Now, it's true, Handsome Jack makes no bones about being the bad guy, and will at every opportunity make you aware that he hates every fibre of your being and will do anything possible to eliminate you from the equation, so how can he possibly trick a player when this dynamic is so well established?

In the mission "To Grandmothers House, We Go" Jack contacts the player waving a small white flag, asking them to put a pause on their feud in order to check on his Grandma. He even sounds genuinely worried, so the player does actually feel compelled to help the man, after all, if we can rise above his literal shoot you in the back mentality and show him compassion, maybe he'll change his ways?

After arriving at her house, we, unfortunately, find old Granny dearest doing a great Roland impression aka being as dead as a doorknob. Bandits it seems were to blame, and after some pleading from Jack, we put an end to their heinous crimes. Jack buzzes in once more, but his tears turn to laughter as he reveals that he actually hired the goons to kill his Nan, and had you kill them so that he wouldn't have to pay anyone!

He's mugged us off! That's it, Jack! forget what I said about compassion, you're going in the ground!
