8 Video Game Villains That Tricked You Into Helping Them
3. Frank Fontaine - Bioshock
Frank. Fontaine.
If there are two words that will make me clench my jaw so much it hurts (outside of "Order Delayed") it's got to be this bloody man's name, as after completing the phenomenal Bioshock, you'll be screaming his name to the heavens above from many leagues below the surface.
It all stems from the brilliant and quite possibly best video game twist ever, in which it turns out that our hunky protagonist Jack has been lured, hook, line, and sinker by the lying stinker Frank Fontaine, all thanks to mind control brainwashing.
It turns out that you were a genetically engineered tool designed solely to take down Andrew Ryan and wrest control of Rapture from his cold dead hands. Being made of his DNA it meant that you were able to bypass a tonne of security configured to his genetic makeup, and even use the regenerative Vita-chambers which again were locked to his genetic imprint, should things go wrong.
All of this is made clear when the player encounters the "would you kindly" room, in which we finally realize that we too have been played, as every single order, demand, and request from our once ally Atlas ended with this phrase, kickstarting an unrelenting drive to get the job done.
It was not only a brilliant narrative device but a rather uncomfortable look at how video games condition players themselves.
God, I love this game.
