8 Video Games That Actually Made Us Want To Go Outside
3. Rock Band/Guitar Hero
Made Us Want To: Start a rock band and conquer the world. Guitar Hero (and later on, Rock Band) deserves some sort of award for genius game design. To take the many complexities of playing live music and simplify it down into five buttons (and a strum bar) while still keeping the exhilaration is amazing. Sure, 'professional' musicians may look down upon it but with the range of artists and songs across the series, everyone that's played a Guitar Hero or Rock Band game must have discovered at least one new artist they now love. The games also made a noble attempt to get people to actually learn guitar (Rock Band in particular) instead of playing with a plastic instrument all their lives, though that noble attempt does come at the cost of some pricy peripherals. In fact, it was mostly cheaper just to buy a proper guitar and learn via the magic of the internet. Still, Rock Band and Guitar Hero inspired us to go out and try to form a rock band for ourselves (though most of us probably got as far as naming the band. The actual music was someone else's responsibility). Turns out that real-life music requires more than five buttons (well, unless you want to write the worst guitar song in history) and a lot of time, effort and money.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
