3. Luigi's Purple Coin Chaos - Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario Galaxy 2 takes the best bits of Mario Galaxy and throws them into a melting pot, trimming all the unnecessary fat like the Overworld and throwing in awesome extra stuff like Yoshi and the Spin Drill. Unfortunately, it also takes its predecessors hardest level and douses it in 'Difficult As Hell' flavoured sauce. The original level tasked Mario with collecting 100 out of 150 purple coins on a level resembling an 8-bit sprite of Luigi. The catch is that the green platforms that make up most of the level disappear once Mario lands on them. What exacerbates the situation further is that the star spawns where Mario started, making careful route-planning absolutely essential. So how does Mario Galaxy 2 make this even harder? By reducing the time limit by one minute and adding Cosmic Mario clones that follow Mario's every move. These pesky buggers are always about a second behind you, making it impossible to pause and think about where to go next. This piles on the pressure, forcing you to constantly change your route and mix things up. But wait, there's more - this time round there are only 100 coins and every single one has to be collected. If you slightly mess up the angle of a jump and miss a few, you'll have to start over. All of these precarious elements combine to make one of the hardest Mario levels ever, and that is not something we say lightly.
