8 Video Games That Made You Hate Yourself

4. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition

If you somehow needed any further proof that most folks will lap up basically anything that Rockstar Games puts out, look no further than the recent remasters of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas.

Despite the suspiciously low-key marketing campaign and extremely sus lack of pre-release reviews, millions of players threw down their hard-earned dough to pre-order this rich triple-serving of nostalgia, safe in the belief that Rockstar could do basically no wrong.

Except Rockstar farmed the remaster job out to another studio, Grove Street Games, and upon launch the collection was eviscerated by critics, who cited a bevy of technical issues, as well as lackluster upscaled textures and a general feeling that the distinctive art direction of the originals had been lost in the remastering process.

The shambolic release product led angry players to review-bomb the game, while Rockstar apologised for the state of the launch and reportedly shelved planned remasters of Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption in response.

Given that the remaster trilogy had sold more than 10 million copies within a month of release, though, that's a whole boatload of people cursing themselves for believing that Rockstar - the studio which has spent over a decade slaving over Grand Theft Auto VI - wouldn't just curl out a sub-par product for a quick buck.
