6. Diablo II: Lord Of Destruction (2001)

The gameplay of the first Diablo consists of a slow and increasingly haunting descent through the demon-infested Tristram Cathedral. Its dangers are very real indeed, and the more apprehensive among us may take quite a while to even risk turning a corner, saving compulsively as we go.

Diablo II is, for the most part, the same experience, but with vastly more open-ended environments and playstyles to utilise, the pace of the game is much more frantic and action-packed than that of its predecessor.

This is shown to deliberate excess in the game-changing expansion pack, Lord of Destruction. Your quest to kill the last of the three Prime Evils, Baal, takes you all the way up Mount Arreat, until you reach the Worldstone Keep at its summit.

This is where Baal resides, and you're going to want to keep on your toes here, as standing still for just a few moments will cause the Lord of Destruction to let out an evil laugh and rain down a random elemental attack on you.

It's a very interesting change-up to the Diablo formula, forcing you to stay on the move while simultaneously getting the most out of that classic dungeon-crawler exploration.
