I know it might seem a bit odd to put an entire developer as a single entry in this list, but when you take a step back and look at their body of work, there truly isn't any other team out there that absolutely loves to keep the player in the dark for as long as possible.

From Sekiro, Dark Souls, Otogi, and even the Kings Field games, Fromsoft has displayed a unique approach for delivering fractured narratives that require a tonne of investment from the player in order to piece together, so much so that it may take multiple playthroughs and extensive homework-style research combing over item descriptions to finally understand your place in the world.

Here's a clue to help you out a little, in FromSoft games your place in the world is at the bottom of a ladder with a laughing monkey at the top of it taking a dump on you.

That being said, if you do take the time, these are some of the deepest, connective in-game worlds going, which is so strange when you consider what little info you glean comes from about two to three lines of dialogue on a rusty weapon you found in a well.
