8 Video Games You Had To Beat More Than Once To Understand
5. Pathologic
What a game.
It really does feel like at every single step with Pathologic that the game both abjectly hates you and wants to keep all of its secrets to itself, but at the same time draws you forward with promises of "what's in the box?"
And much like that infamous Simpsons moment, you'll find yourself screaming "the box THE BOX!" to which Pathologic then laughs loudly and disappears into the ether to be discovered once more. In fact, that's the best way to describe understanding this game narrative on a first playthrough, like trying to grab at smoke.
To try and state what's going on in this game is to do it a massive disservice as even saying that you're a doctor looking to cure a plague spreading through a strange village actually turns out to be false, as this is a title where you play three different characters, each with a different slant on the events, and each is as compelling as the other.
Add to this the fact that this might all be a play being enacted by some God-like children, and the fact that you can even unlock an ending where you meet the developers of the game itself who then change the meaning of the experience entirely and you have a game that lives up to its namesake aka it is a pathological liar when it comes to revealing its narrative "truths" to you.
