Look up ‘contradictary’ in the dictionary, and you won’t find it, because that’s not how you spell contradictory, which is exactly what I’m being. But while COD shouldn’t endlessly fiddle with those beloved core mechanics, they still need to play with our expectations of them.

First, let’s start shaking up those predictable three-lane multiplayer maps. And I don’t just mean making the maps bigger, which got Ghosts into trouble, along with all the other things that got Ghosts into trouble.

Playing with multiplayer also doesn’t mean remaking another ‘fan-favourite’ now that you’ve run out of genuine fan-favourites’. Nobody was asking to replay Terminal.

Basic tweaks like being able to peek over walls or amble casually over obstacles, Battlefield-style, is a good place to start. Compared to FPS rivals, COD feels weighted down. And take another look at how you level up weapons. Keep it simple and addictive, not the grind that it’s become.

Also, no microtransactions.
