8 Weirdest Video Game Enemies (And What They Represent)
7. Wraith - Evolve
Now, Evolve might not have been everyones cup of tea, but that doesn't mean it didn't have some badass monster design poured into it that deserves a little bit of love. The Wraith in particular offered up some seriously spooky gameplay in her stealth-based combat.
Fast moving, floating, and armed with a set of pincers as well as an extra set of arms, the developers wanted to make something "a little bit of King Kong and a lot of Predator" in what feels like a giant monster movie made playable - and the influence is clear in the Wraith's ability to abduct her prey, at the very least, a la Kong's own Empire State Building romp.
Design director Chris Ashton said of the creative process:
"We had a bunch of ideas for teleporting around and spawning decoys... That led to us thinking about sirens, we started thinking about mermaids being very deceiving and calling the hunters to their doom."
With the long tendrils for legs and effeminate, smooth form, that mythological influence reads nicely across the Wraith, only as if she's swimming through the air instead of through water.
