8 Weirdest Video Game Enemies (And What They Represent)
6. Makkapitew & Wendigos - Until Dawn
As the narrative of Until Dawn unfolds, it's discovered that wendigos are responsible for death and destruction across the peak, possessing those that have been driven to cannibalism in desperate times. This of course includes miners caught in an accident of the 1950s that make up the bulk of the monsters attacking our party, and poor Hannah Washington from the fateful night she and her sister went missing a year prior.
Wendigos in mythology are from Algonquian stories, and have been recreated very faithfully by the developers in game. Hannah as a wendigo is particularly interesting, however, as she represents the much larger, much more powerful spirit of Makkapitew - insinuated to be possessed by the strongest wendigo by her larger size and greater aggression.
Makkapitew is the Algonquian word for "one who has big teeth", which seems like a fair enough assessment given this ones hunger for killing the humans that have come to bother its mountaintop home, as well as coming full circle on eating being the integral part of creating a wendigo.
Her transformation into one of these creatures is symbolic of her being outcast from her group - as wendigo legend can depict them as isolated, rejected individuals - taking on the monstrous form of their cruelty and enacting it back upon them.
