8 Weirdest Video Game Enemies (And What They Represent)
5. Watchers - Metro Series
Somewhere between a wolf and some kind of goblin, the watchers are particularly canine in their mutated form, with facial features and a gait that could be argued to be that of a dog - at least, before the nuclear war.
Interestingly, despite being based on a book originally, the game's vision of a Watcher seems to take much of its inspiration from the Barghest of Dungeons and Dragons - who's originally based on the mythological creature of the same name.
The Barghest is a big old black dog, one that serves as an omen of death. The latter half of its name - 'ghest' - is born from the old speech of 'ghost' in Northern England, with the name as a whole referring to 'town-ghost'. It makes sense that the Watcher takes its inspiration from this supernatural entity then, being the last haunting remnant of a world that once was in its mutated, ghastly form.
The name was changed from Watcher to Watchman in the most recent Metro Exodus, perhaps as a reference to their penchant for having lone scouts that then call the pack over to attack.
