8 Weirdest Video Game Enemies (And What They Represent)
4. Sewer Centipede - Dark Souls 3
Appearing initially in the waters as the floating corpse of a woman with long, black hair, it doesn't take long for these things to rear up and go full mutated Grudge on any player foolish enough to get too close to them.
Like being drunk in a metal bar full of long haired men, whilst the Sewer Centipede's backs might seem like a woman, their fronts are nothing of the sort - replete with numerous arms and grabbing hands in a spider-y mess of limbs and pale skin.
Looking to Japanese folklore then, the Sewer Centipedes bear many similarities with Jorōgumo, likely where they draw inspiration from. Jorōgumo are supernatural monsters (aka Yōkai) akin who are able to shape shift into beautiful women, with the word also synonymous with some species of spider in Japenese too - hence the translation to "woman-spider".
Even when in the form of a beautiful woman, these creatures' reflections will still show a spider, making Dark Souls' use of watery homes for its Sewer Centipedes all the more interesting. In Jorōgumo stories, many take place near pools, waterfalls, and other bodies of water too: a natural home for the creature both in mythology and its gaming counterpart.
