8 Worst Video Games Of 2020 (So Far)
3. Elder Scrolls: Blades (Switch)
Was anybody asking for an Elder Scrolls with base-building, where timers can be bypassed with microtransactions, and gear gets doled out through loot boxes? Because somehow, Bethesda thought this was the best fit for the best fantasy RPG series of all time.
Blades is just as hollow, sterile and money-grubby as you can imagine. "It's a free Elder Scrolls!" they want you to think, but that's like saying a spare tire is a car.
Elder Scrolls: Blades might be free-to-play, but it's entirely on rails. Locations repeat far too often, you're only really piloting a camera at a slew of foes that appear one by one, and interactions with NPCs boil down to whatever transaction can be accomplished, before moving you onto the next arbitrary quest.
There's no love, no passion, no creative flair or sense that anybody bringing this to life actually wanted to do so. Any sense of "role-playing" amounts to how much pride you take in building a homestead with your premium currency of "Gems", or you can grind out crafting components instead.
Yippee.
The absolute zenith of the worst practices far too many top-tier companies gave into this generation, you have to wonder if putting such mobile market-focused toss on the Switch was just another way to remind you that Skyrim exists.
Hopefully this marks the last time Bethesda go down another "experimental" route with one of their most beloved IPs. Here's to the next generation bringing about a change in their attitude towards fans and consumers.
