Moving on from what could well be the two games that bear the best roster of companions ever collected for an RPG to a protagonist who is a shoe-in for one of the most well-written characters in any medium, video game or otherwise, we have Arthur Morgan’s anti hero's journey in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar Games have a reputation of releasing stellar games but even for them Red Dead Redemption 2 was a masterclass in video game storytelling.

In terms of video game mechanics, fans and critics were divided. While many loved the tactile and heavy feeling of movement, looting, and gunplay, others found it a little too cumbersome and time consuming, especially with the many scripted scenic walking and horse-riding segments. If you were along for the ride, though, figuratively, you probably appreciated the weight of it all. Narratively, contextually, and mechanically, Red Dead Redemption 2 has a wide world for you to explore and plenty of side activities both overt and hidden to keep you busy for well into 100 hours and then some.

But unlike many games this long, Arthur’s central journey never gets lost in the weeds or takes a backseat to his side adventures since everything is woven into the gang in the middle of it all, and his personal evolution as a character.
