9 Brilliant Video Game Mechanics That Are Criminally Underused

4. New Game Plus (That Actually Adds Something Significant) - Dark Souls 2

Whilst New Game Plus is slowly becoming more prevalent, it's still not being used in the way that it should be. And while everyone is always ready to shoot down Dark Souls 2 as the odd one out, there is one thing it does better than any game in the series and any game period. That is New Game Plus.

Whereas most games simply add new game plus and up the difficulty, Dark Souls 2 upped the ante and started messing around with new tougher enemies. Playing the game was completely different with new enemies cropping up often with higher damage and health making the game even tougher the second round through.

On top of that, new items and rings appear, with bosses even dropping new stuff. Merchants have different items and even bosses can change with additional enemies. One boss even attacks you early allowing you to get damage in before the proper encounter.

The mechanic in rather ingenious and essentially doubles play time. And whilst new game plus is picking up traction, hopefully more games will follow in Dark Souls 2's direction.
